Review

Rating:

So I finally read this after reading/hearing all the hype surrounding it. I had picked it up a few times in the bookstore and read a few paragraphs but inevitably returned it to the shelf. It struck me as clumsy and unpolished. The final push happened when I saw the trailer for the movie.

My initial impression (clumsy and unpolished) hasn’t really changed. So what merits the 7 rating? The storyline. I got hooked. Sucked in. And if you consider that this is really a young adult book, geared toward tweens and teenage girls who go ga-ga for the dark, brooding, dangerous hero - I was willing to be a little forgiving about the writing style.

It’s a great storyline. It grabbed my attention and held it. That doesn’t mean that I completely understand all the pitifully longing sighs over Edward. I kid you not… After reading just a few comments on various blogs, the overwhelming theme seems to be “I can never love anyone but Edward.” And I strongly suspect that sentiment isn’t just coming from those angst-ridden tweens. I suppose there’s nothing wrong with a little imaginary crush now and again. But there’s something just a little pathetic about the downright obsessiveness I’ve seen across the blogosphere. (Yes, I should be shot for saying blogosphere.)

Will I keep reading the series? Yes. Will I fling myself headlong off the nearest cliff because there’s no chance I’ll ever have an Edward? Hmph. I’m not really the type to throw myself away on a man, let alone a fictional character. Besides, who would remember to feed the cat?
